# How to Comment
(and Why It Matters)
For the past 15 to 20 years, I have been creating content in both video and written form. During that time, I’ve noticed certain trends in how people engage with content, especially when they are encouraged to watch a video and leave a comment.
One trend that has stood out consistently over the last 5 to 10 years is that many people—particularly from the subcontinent—simply comment, “Mashallah.”
Now, there is absolutely nothing wrong with this. Appreciating someone’s efforts and expressing praise is a good thing. However, the problem is that the engagement often stops there. It doesn’t go any deeper.

If you genuinely enjoyed a video, then explain why. What exactly did you like? Which point stood out to you? What insight, reminder, or gem did you gain from it?
A one-word comment may be positive, but it doesn’t really help the content creator, and it doesn’t help the person commenting either.
So, here are some practical tips on how all of us can improve our commenting—and why it matters.
## 1. Watch Carefully
Even if it’s a simple motivational video, pay attention. If you benefited from it, mention the specific point that resonated with you.
## 2. Watch with Questions in Mind
Approach content with curiosity. Listen actively and think about what you would like clarified or explored further.
## 3. Remember That Others Are Reading
Your comment isn’t just for the creator. Muslims and non-Muslims alike may read it. Your comment might encourage someone else to ask a question, reflect on an issue, or engage with the topic more deeply.
## 4. Be Critical and Objective
If you strongly disagree with something, say so respectfully. Healthy discussion and constructive debate are valuable. We don’t need insults, abuse, or hostility. We need manners, respect, and sincere dialogue.
## 5. Ask Questions
If there is something you didn’t understand, ask about it.
Many of my own videos contain training-based content and deeper concepts. Sometimes I’m genuinely surprised by how few questions are asked. Did everyone really understand the entire concept? Did they grasp the deeper implications?
If not, ask.
For example:
“I didn’t fully understand the point between 31:22 and 38:01. Could you explain it further?”
Questions are often where the real learning begins.
## 6. Comments Help the Algorithm
This is not the most important point, and we shouldn’t become obsessed with it. However, thoughtful comments do help content reach more people.
## 7. Your Comment Might Help Others
Sometimes the way you summarise a point may connect with someone more effectively than the video itself. A powerful comment can become a source of benefit for many others.
## 8. Don’t Rush
If someone asks you to leave a comment, don’t feel pressured to write something instantly.
Put a reminder on your phone if necessary. Return to it when you have a few minutes and can give it proper thought. Yes, a quick comment is better than no comment at all, but try to develop the habit of commenting thoughtfully.
It only takes a few extra seconds.
## 9. Think About the Bigger Mission
If we improve the quality of our comments—with more depth, reflection, and critical thinking—we don’t just help a channel grow.
We contribute to the wider mission of dawah: reviving the Ummah, inviting non-Muslims to Islam, and positively influencing the world around us.
## 10. No Time to Watch Long Videos?
That’s understandable.
However, you can still benefit through the comments section. By engaging in discussion, you may gain insights from others or receive clarification directly from the content creator.
## 11. Your Comment Could Be Featured
A thoughtful comment may be so valuable that the creator highlights it in future content.
Imagine benefiting others through a comment you wrote in a few minutes. That’s a powerful opportunity.
## 12. Treat Each Video Like a Course
Imagine every video was part of a university module and your comments were being assessed.
Would “Amazing video!” or “Mashallah” receive full marks?
Probably not.
A quality comment demonstrates reflection, engagement, understanding, and critical thought.
## Final Thoughts
Commenting is more than just reacting.
When done properly, it deepens your understanding, benefits others, helps the creator improve, and contributes to a much greater purpose.
The next time you watch something beneficial, don’t just write:
“Mashallah.”
Write why.
Share the lesson you learned.
Mention the point that changed your perspective.
Ask a question.
Start a discussion.
You may be surprised by how much benefit can come from a single thoughtful comment.
