Plus One

As practising Muslims, we have a habit—a habit where we attend Islamic events, conferences, or lectures at mosques, usually by ourselves or with our families. What I’m proposing with ‘plus one’ is that whenever we have the chance to attend such events or a Halaqa at a mosque, we should think about bringing and encouraging one more person to join us.

Ideally, this person could be someone who is non-practising or even non-Muslim, whenever possible. This is something all practising Muslims, whether part of the DM network, youth club, or any community striving for positive change, should adopt. We need to start embracing the idea of ‘plus one.’

Engaging directly in Dawah with non-practising Muslims or non-Muslims, whether in person or online, can be challenging. Therefore, at the very least, no matter how introverted or passive you may feel, implementing this strategy is within reach.

So, the next time there’s an event or a Halaqa at a mosque, take a moment to look through your phone contacts, scroll through your WhatsApp chats, or check your DMs on Instagram or other social media platforms. Extend an invitation! For an added touch, consider offering an incentive like a meal or coffee afterwards.

Let’s expand our thinking beyond ourselves and begin to think collectively as a community. Let’s cultivate empathy for those who may feel left behind.

Before every event, whether online or in person:

  • Consider who to invite.
  • Make a shortlist of at least five people and contact them—better yet, give them a call instead of just a message.
  • Encourage them to join you.

From now Never attend an event with out bringing at least one other non practising Muslim!
